“Tone” is a stencil-based artist whose name reflects his concerns with both music and image-making.
His painted portraits are based on photographic images of Jazz musicians captured in performance through photographs at live venues in the London area.
Whilst he uses a technique associated with street art and urban imagery, the paintings are produced in a studio where time affords more opportunities for experimentation and play than the hit-and-run approach that is a necessity to wall-based work in an urban environment.
“Tone” uses the structure of the stencil as the basis for the artwork, but takes advantage of the process to improvise with and exploit accidental and incidental effects of paint.
His interest in the qualities and effects of paint as a medium are also evident in the work, where multiple versions of the same image allow him to test out range of visual effects.
At times these are interpretations of the music that is playing in the studio at the time of production, altering the mood and atmosphere of the final image.
