James' passion for art first surfaced at a young age, where he would often draw on the streets of his hometown in Byker, Newcastle Upon Tyne. James' earliest memories of his art were a piece drawn on a kitchen table's underside depicting spitfires and other era-related works.
James left school in 1955 and began to study life drawing, design and art for reproduction; this was a 3-year course that James had to sadly give up when his mother passed. He took up work and neglected painting for over 15 years. By chance, James was contacted by the queens artist Petro Annigoni, who agreed to mentor James to rekindle his love for art. He was commissioned to paint the telephone manager P.I Docherty and the Pipe Major Peter Lambert B.E.M, which H.R.H Princess Margret presented at Blagdon Hall in 1987. Following this, James was asked to paint the Mayor, Arthur C Cook, this commission hangs in the mansion house in Jesmond.
Alongside art, James' other passion was breeding and showing dogs Shetland Sheep Dogs in competitions such as Crufts. From the back of this, James began Painting pet portraits and became well known amongst breeders and fellow dog lovers alike. James has pet commissions in a number of countries. His Hans Cavalier Dog was shown on the side of a building in Times Sq. New York, USA. James has since received the Hamilton Ford Award of Excellence and the Golden Brush Award.
